Byron Society Events
Dressing up in penguin suits and eating and drinking to excess in a formal
setting is an ancient Oxford tradition, and when no reasonable excuse exists
for such activities, one is invented, known as a "Dining Society". Until
recently, the Dining Society has been mainly the preserve of Hooray Henries
(e.g. The Bullingdon, The Assassins, The Keats Society, etc.), and the ritual
destruction of the surroundings was and is an important part of the occasion.
This is not normally part of Byron Society dinners, owing mainly to our limited
ability to pay for the damage. Instead, the artistic equivalent, namely the
presentation of poetry composed by the invitees, takes place.
