Commentary on "Kirnymandias"

This piece takes its inspiration from Walter Kirn’s pornographic novel, The Oxford Girl, which boasts such cunningly-disguised Trinity characters as ‘Mr. Rundle’, the English don, ‘Dean Mulner’ [the only accurate portrayal in the book] and a red-haired student called ‘Juliet’. The latter is the proud owner — in the novel — of an ivory dildo, which is used to prominent (or should that be ‘disappearing’?) effect: I make reference to this item in Rockhead Revisited. Walter took the subtle nom de guerre ‘Contemporary Anonymous’ for this oeuvre, which was published by Blue Moon Books of New York, presumably so as not to blight his subsequent literary career, though one would surely have thought Walter keen to acknowledge this early child of his fancy … by the way, which of you has my copy? I wouldn’t mind it back — as long as the pages aren’t all stuck together. Connoisseurs may wish to consult Shelley’s Ozymandias, if only to see how leech-like my effort is in its emulation and how freer are the other two variants in this collection (DJ).
