I could compare this prose morsel to a Bandello-influenced tale of deception, with touches of a Rabelaisian rollicking quality, Mérimée’s detached and dry observation, Hoffmann’s baroque atmosphere, Chekhov and Poe’s psychological insight and drive and Kafkaesque incongruity.
